O.k., this post is really about organization  (New Year = organizational goals and weight loss goals, at least according to the store ads), and one of the keys to organization around my house is LIDS.

I’ll explain.  I’m one of those people who sees a cute canvas bin, wicker basket, etc., and has a knee jerk reaction, “That would be perfect for storing (fill in the blank) “craft supplies, photos, makeup,” etc.   As my daughter became a teenager, she would say, “Mom, that’s not efficient. You need lids.”   I didn’t listen at first.  More cute baskets and canvas bins later, I finally got it.

Storage with lids

You need lids.

Lids keep out dust, allow stacking (and keep the stacks uniform.)  Now, instead of the baskets and bins with no lids,  I buy pretty boxes of different sizes with lids at a craft store.  They come covered in all kinds of decorative paper, and I found  some to match my craft room decor. (Or you can do what my daughter did for her room, and cover them with your own pretty paper. She found some gorgeous wrapping paper at the bookstore.)

I also love those rectangular photo boxes with lids. They are easy to find and are good for storing  lots of things besides photos too. Get them in a couple of different solid colors to coordinate with  the colors in a room, and they look really nice, clean and simple on a shelf or atop an armoire, etc.

Another word: Drawers.  You need those too.  I put a smallish plastic drawer unit in my bathroom closet, with individual drawers dedicated to hair supplies, makeup, and first aid.  I have wider, flatter, plastic drawers in my kitchen closet, dedicated to writing supplies (stationary, greeting cards, envelopes, shipping supplies, etc.) and smaller ones atop those, for pens, paper clips, etc.

I know many of you are saying, “DUH” right now, but some of you may be a lot like me, and the light bulbs are turning on as you read. If you are one of the lightbulb people, I am urging you to get some containers with lids to replace some of those baskets and lidless bins, and start organizing.

And, just because she’s cute, here’s a picture of Sunny, taking a nap. She snuggled her toy all by herself. Pretty sweet, isn’t she?

Actually, I feel a bit the way she looks in this picture, as I had sudden, unexpected gall bladder surgery on Tuesday. I’m doing fine, recovering nicely.  A good reminder not to put off washing your hair in the MORNING, because you never know when you might find yourself in a hospital bed that EVENING…

  1. I tend to forget about lids. Especially when I see super cute little boxes and baskets. Even more, when I see super cute little boxes and baskets on sale! Lol…then I end up not using them 'cause I don't have room (if I had lids I could stack them, like you mentioned above). So I totally get it.

Sorry to hear about your unexpected surgery but glad you are recovering and doing good!
