Art and Craft Room Organization

It’s been a while since I posted about my new art and craft room organization. I recently did a complete inventory and purging of supplies, and I did a first post about how I store my paper and more (on the shelves at the right of the top photos), here.

Since then, I’ve been working on this area in my basement off and on, and I have some progress updates for you. It’s now a space that welcomes me to come and create –  to draw, to work in my journals, create calligraphy, lettering, and watercolor projects, etc., and I’m so excited about that.

This is honestly the first time I’ve ever had a well-planned, organized space to create. I’m almost giddy about it.

Here is a little bit about how I’ve organized everything (knowing that I’m still not finished, and there are bound to be tweaks in the future.)

Art and Craft Supplies Organization (Brush Pens, Calligraphy Supplies, Journaling Supplies, Watercolor, etc.)

The little white drawers in the center of the workspace contain all of my brush markers, paint markers, fine liners, etc. I labeled each of the drawers with this washi tape (which I hope will stay put.)  I chose the washi because it’s so easily removable. My first thought was to use the black chalkboard labels that I had used on my paper drawers, but I went with the washi.  (I bought these tiny drawers on Amazon for my markers, and I love them, but they are much less expensive if you can find them locally. I have even seen them at the grocery store.)

I labeled the little drawers with this washi.

I love my wood desk organizer (to the left of the white drawers, above.) It holds my lettering and calligraphy books, my journals, and some of my rubber stamps.

This  is the desk organizer that works so well for me in the space.

The Best Drawers for Brush Pens

I had already been storing my brush pens and markers in the little white drawers, but they hadn’t been labeled well and were stored away in an armoire, not right at my fingertips.

The round glass table (that you can barely see at the right of the top photo) provides me with a workspace for bigger projects. (Plus, it holds my Keurig!)  The white cupboard, below, was left here by the previous homeowners. It’s great storage.

Craft Supplies Storage and Organization

This cupboard holds tools, adhesives, more inks, watercolor pencils, etc. There are still some supplies in another craft cabinet that will make their way here, so I’m not completely finished with the organization.

washi tape storage

Washi tape makes journaling more fun.

I’ve had this plastic rolling cart with drawers for many years, (at the bottom right of the work table), but it too, wasn’t organized well.  I re-organized it, filling it with supplies I want to have close by.

I bought mine years ago, but I think this one is actually the current version of mine.

Because there is so much light that comes in from the sliding glass doors nearby, I cut some pieces of wood patterned poster board that I bought at Joann and adhered them with just some painter’s tape, to the sides of the chest. (The sides were clear like the front, before.)  It took just a few minutes, looks nice to me, and keeps the light off of my supplies.

craft drawers

(Although my favorite aesthetic isn’t white plastic (!), I am using a lot of storage that I already had on hand, and it’s all functional. At some point, I might cover the fronts of the drawers.)

This drawer holds some of my calligraphy pens, nibs, ink and fountain pen ink.

This drawer is for gel pens.  I have several kinds of Gelly Roll pens, separated by type (Glaze, Soufle, and Regular), Pentel Energels (my favorites), and Inkjoy.  They are each in separate drawer organizers.

I keep chalks and Distress Inks here.

I plan to store my watercolors in this cart too, but for now, those are in the white cupboard.

I love pretty stickers (and probably always will.) I use them in my  journals. I keep most of my stickers in a mini-binder (especially the ones on sheets), as shown in my previous post here,  but I love pretty little boxes like these, below. I keep many of the loose stickers in these.

I still want to hang some art work in the space, but I do love looking at the old photo collage my mom made years ago.

The sunlight from the window makes me happy, and this little plant does, too.

Sunny likes to watch me from her cozy place on the futon, opposite my workspace. (She looks a little bedraggled here. At 15, some days are better than others for her, but she is a happy girl.)

Please Pin for Later!

I hope you’ve enjoyed my tour, and I hope some ideas here have helped you.

If you have any other suggestions for organizing art and craft supplies, I’d love to hear what works for you.

  18. Thanks, Jean! Haha, I'm not into a whole lot of crafts these days, as most of my supplies get used for just journaling and lettering. (I do love to draw and want to do more watercolor.) But there a lot of supplies, and this is the first time I've ever had them organized!

  19. I love this and am wowed by your level of organization. I am not much into crafting, but I have a craft room that also doubles as my writing space. Great ideas. Shared on my Facebook page for a friend who does more of both. Great post, glad that I came across it! Michele Somerville, The Beach Girl Chronicles

  21. Your organized craft room is amazing! It must be inspiring to simply sit down at your desk with all those crafting, art, and lettering supplies right at your fingertips.

  22. I enjoyed this! I’ve had a craft/sewing room for a few years now, since my middle son left the nest. But the room for it in this house was a little cramped. When my youngest son left home last year, I transferred my craft room into his old room, and I love it–more space, more light. It was also helpful in that I had to go through all my stuff when moving it, so I was able to organize it better.

I have those small plastic drawers on my work table, too. I make cards, and use those drawers for stickers separated into type (flowers, animals, etc.). I also have a plastic set of drawers on wheels where I keep punches, ribbons, etc. I know what you mean about white plastic not being the favorite aesthetic, but it works, and it’s cheaper than some alternatives.

I love those pretty boxes! Those are just the things that personalize a space and add a little different aesthetic.

    1. Thanks so much, Barbara. Your craft room sounds wonderful. Lots of light is always good! Those pretty boxes do make me happy, and you’re right, they add a little something to the way I feel when I’m in the space.
