My husband and I have a fascination with the Fox Theatre (“Fabulous Fox Theatre”) in St. Louis. It’s a former movie palace that is now a magnificent performing arts center. They have live touring Broadway shows, concerts, and comedians. If you ever visit, I’m sure you will have a fascination with it too!
We took the tour this past Saturday (again.) One of these days, we’re going to take the tour on a day that there isn’t a performance, so that we can also see the backstage area. (There is a graffitti wall there with signatures from the stars that have performed in the shows.) But, even though we couldn’t see that area this time, the tour was fantastic, and the time flew by.
It’s an amazing place. And yes, so fabulous. It opened in 1929 and was meticulously restored in 1982. It’s always gorgeous, and even more so when decorated for the Christmas holidays. It has an identical twin theater in Detroit, Michigan.
The columns look like marble, don’t they? We learned on the tour that everything is an illusion. The columns are actually plaster!
I love the ornate details everywhere. Look at the gorgeous hand rail.
The chandelier is lowered once a year for cleaning. It’s large enough to stand in.
The original curtains still hangs. It is seldom raised and lowered, due to its age.
The carpet is an exact copy of the original. All of the elephants’ tusks in the carpet point toward the stage.
This beautiful stained glass on the ceiling of a women’s lounge was rediscovered during the renovation. It had been covered over!
See the black squares? Those are the original projector windows.
The tour guide gave so many other wonderful details on the actual tour. We learned that the Fox had central vacuuming and air conditioning — in 1929!
Most of the photos were taken with my Nikon D5100 DSLR and the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G lens.
There are several “must see” locations in St. Louis. The Fabulous Fox is one of them. Please go! And take a lot of pictures while you’re there!

Thanks for your comment! Yes, I hope you will visit the Fox–either to take the tour or see a show, or preferably both! I do love St. Louis also. It is a wonderful city with so much to explore. There is a newer bus station now, but I think the original one is still there. The last I heard, they were going to restore it and use it for a Veteran's complex of some kind, but I'm not sure if that ever happened. I will have to look into that!
I tried to delete my comment because it showed my email address instead of my name. I fixed it on my end but it still shows on your end. Thank you for your reply about St. Louis. Sorry about the delete.
