Every year, I look forward to seeing the kids appear on our porch in their costumes on Halloween. They are always so excited and proud of their costumes. I love to ask them if they have a joke for me after they shout “Trick or Treat!” (I found out within the last few years that the joke tradition is mainly a St. Louis thing. I always had a joke ready as a kid on Halloween, back in the ’60s, and I love to hear the jokes, even now. I make sure the kids know that they’ll get candy, even if they don’t have a joke!)
