How to Make Victorian Paper Cones
I have a project for you today that is pretty and versatile and would make a cute Valentine, Christmas, Easter treat or teacher gift or (insert occasion!), filled with candy, flowers, or little trinkets. You can even turn them upside down to make cute cone Christmas tree decorations, make great paper carrots for Easter, or the perfect May Day flower holder.

Supplies:
- Pattern papers, gift wrap, or other heavyweight paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Craft glue or hot glue
Here’s how to Make a Paper Cone:
These are really simple to make.
Any square piece of heavyweight paper will work. 8×8 or 12×12 pattern papers are especially easy, but a piece of heavyweight gift wrap or handmade paper cut into a square will work too. (Traditionally, tussie mussies were fairly small, but bigger ones hold more treats…)
- Place the square paper or cardstock in front of you, wrong side up, with a point facing down. Draw an arc from the left point to the right point, and cut along that line.
- Shape the paper into a cone, overlap the edges, and glue in place with strong craft glue or hot glue. (The heavier the paper you use, the stronger the glue you will need, possibly even hot glue.) You may have to trim across the top a bit. I found this method online somewhere a while back, but you can actually make a simple cone many ways.
- Now have fun decorating it. This is a good time to pull out the lace trim, the stick on gems, etc. I used lace tape, which was quick and easy. Real lace trims are more elegant. If you have any border paper punches, you can make pretty “lacey” trims out of paper too.
- For the handle, punch two holes in the top across from each other, thread ribbon through, and tie at the sides.
One of the fun things about this project is that it can be as simple or as frilly as you like. I’m typically not a “frilly” person, except when it comes to Valentines (and babies…and weddings. Hmmm… ) If you don’t like frilly, just choose a simpler paper and less embellishment.
The one above isn’t finished yet, but will be more tailored than frilly.
I have to say, I prefer them fancy.
This Also Makes a Great Project for Kids
This is a fun craft to do with kids. They can draw on the cone (before you glue it!), use stickers, etc. Have them make one for Grandma or a neighbor or a teacher. My kids made these for their art teachers years ago, filled with chocolate candies, and they were much appreciated. It’s also fun at kids’ school parties.
Fill one with treats and make someone happy!

Thank you Mrs. Smith! Yes, I am feeling so much better now. Thank you also for grabbing one of my buttons! I am honored.
These are really pretty. And you could use school styled craft paper and a ruler ribbon and put little things for children like pencils and things. I love it.
peace to you and your family,
Pam

ooo Pam this is so pretty and thank you for sharing how to make it.
Have a great day!
What a fun idea, and just in time for Valentine's Day! My kids would love making these. Of course, my son will use it for dinosaur or car storage. 🙂 Or to dump something on his sister…
I love these, what a great idea for our mail carrier and postal workers! I don't really have teachers these can be made for but I will surely be making some to keep in my car around Valentines week so I can share the love possibly to some folks I don't even know. Sort of like a RAK. Thanks for coming over and linking up on the Handcrafted Valentine Love Linky!
These are so cute! I love them and your pictures are so pretty!
Thanks Julie! Â
Thanks Lynnie! Â What a great idea to make some for the mail carrier and postal workers. You have a thoughtful idea to keep some in your car–I love that.
Yes, my son would have used these to hold little toys too (but he's not little anymore!)  My daughter might have been the one to use it to dump something on her brother, rather than the other way around  though!
Very sweet and so pretty in pink. They fit in beautifully with your blog's theme. What will you fill them with? Maybe love notes?
Thanks Barb. Â Hmm, love notes–that would be sweet!
Hi Pam, you are one of the blessed reasons why I love this wonderful world of blogging.  Meeting creative, artful women. I have no sense of creativity and I will certainly use your idea for my childrens' Valentine gifts. Thank you for dropping by my blog and leaving such a sweet message. Hope you don't mind, I'm following your blog. Have a good day.Â
Sela, your sweet comment made my morning. Thank you so much, and I'm so glad you are a new follower.
I had never heard of a Tussie Mussie! What a cute idea! Â Â I just stopped by from SITS to say hello. Â Hope you find time to return the visit!
Thanks Eva–I will definitely stop by!
When I was a kid, we used to make these around Mayday. We would put wildflowers in them, hang them on a neighbors door, ring the doorbell and run and hide. We always did the same neighbors every year–I am sure they really new where they came from, but they never let on.
What a cute and pretty idea!
