Yardwork for the Fall and Winter Months

We all know that yards require a lot of upkeep. We are used to that during the summer, when plants and grass are growing like crazy. But there are still maintenance jobs that you might want to do during the fall and winter to ensure that everything continues to look its best, for now and for the spring. Here are some things to consider for yardwork during the fall and winter months.

Clear Up the Garden

One of the simplest jobs to begin with is making sure that the garden is tidy and clear. When the growing season comes to end, you’ll find that many plants start to die out, of course. You may need to clear up the beds and borders, removing weeds and anything that has died out. Rip out anything you no longer need, and you’ll create a fresh, cleared space for new growth. Clearing any leftover leaves from the fall season is always a good idea here too, to protect grass and plants.

Prepare to Be Safe

Next, depending on your location, you’ll want to make sure that the entire outside space is ready for any risky weather that might hit. Having a way to remove and clear snow with a cordless electric snow shovel can be a huge help. You might also want to think about getting salt products now that you can spread when it gets icy, rather than waiting until the bad weather hits.

Redo Any Hard Landscaping

This is also a great time for you to consider any hard landscaping work. Whether you want to get new fencing installed or redo your patio or deck area, this is the perfect time to get it done. It’s nice to have everything done and ready for spring, so that you can just sit back and enjoy your garden without any construction (and destruction) going on, when the weather warms up. A good contractor will give you details about which projects can be done during the winter in your area.

Clear the Gutters

Make sure that your gutters are in the best possible shape, as leaves, dirt, and debris in the gutters can cause them to overflow. Overflowing gutters will possibly cause problems like water damage and foundation issues. Gutters should generally be cleaned twice a year, with fall and spring being most recommended. (Aim for every 3 months, though, if you have pine trees or similar foliage close by.) Make sure you do it before winter really sets in. Clearing your gutters now will mean that they can work efficiently when it rains.

Consider Sustainability Efforts

Implement some sustainability measures that you can then run year-round. Planning ahead for these measures will help you get started faster in the spring. Aiming to be as environmentally friendly with your gardening as possible is a contribution to the planet. Always start with the least toxic treatment for any problems that occur, and only move up from there if needed. Avoiding chemicals and looking to reduce waste are important things to consider, even in the winter.

I hope these tips help you keep your yard looking great this season and in the months to come!
