4 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Autumn

Preparing your home for the change in seasons can be a great way to get rid of the old and get a fresh new look. It’s also a good time to tackle those bigger jobs you’ve been putting off all summer. Prepare for autumn now, and get your home cozy and cared for before winter shows its face.

Clean The Yard

You can do many things to get your yard ready for autumn. From giving the yard a good clean to getting the final mowing done on the lawn to keep it neat for the winter, it’s a good time to get out there and take care of all the small details. Plus, doing these jobs now will remind you to buy parts to fix your yard equipment so you are not caught off guard come spring.

If you have a flowerbed or you want to prepare your lawn, the following tips might come in handy;

  • Scarify
  • Trim back the property and edges
  • Fork compacted areas
  • Aerate the lawn
  • Remove any dead flowers or dead
  • Apply fertilizer 3 weeks before the last mowing
  • Repair dead patches
  • Add compost, bark, or chips to your flower beds

Service Your HVAC

As you go from cooling your home to heating it, its a good idea to get your HVAC or heating system serviced and have any repairs carried out before you rely on it for warmth. Your system is under strain in extreme temperatures, so checking to make sure it’s in good working order and fixing any problems can help you avoid emergency call-out charges and massive bills, should your appliance stop working for any reason during autumn and winter.

Deep Clean

Use this time to go through your house with a fine-toothed comb and clean all those areas you have been putting off tackling. Get inside the cupboards and wash the kickboards and trims. Look at all the places you don’t generally clean frequently; get down, and give them a good scrub. Often overlooked areas of the home to be cleaned include switch plates, outside external doors, internal doors and doorframes, handles, and under kitchen appliances. Don’t forget to clean out any dryer lint, if applicable.

Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Monitors

These items should be checked regularly, but make it a priority now to double-check that they all still work. All of your detector devices should have test buttons that you can press to ensure that they still work and the battery hasn’t died. If your alarms go off periodically for no reason, the battery could need replacing. Testing the unit will help you ensure everything is in good working order.

Preparing your home for autumn can give you a clean slate to start a new season. Clear out the summer, and prepare for colorful days and cozy nights ahead.
