Your Guide to Stress-Free Moving

We all know that house hunting isn’t for cowards, and neither is the move itself. There aren’t many people who can say they ‘enjoy’ moving house. Sure, it’s amazing once you’re finally in your new place, but there’s a lot of stress involved to get you there. But what if moving could be stress-free? (Or at least somewhat less stressful?)  It can be, but you just need to get prepared first.

Here are some tips to help make your next move much easier.

Get Rid of Anything You Don’t Want to Take with You

There’s no point packing a load of things that you don’t really want with you in your new home. That sounds obvious, but it’s not always easy to purge. From clothes to kitchen items, you can make the moving process much simpler, though, by lightening the load. Declutter your home room by room, and  get rid of anything you no longer need, to help you get ready to start afresh in your new home.

Make Packing and Unpacking as Easy as Possible

By taking steps to make packing and unpacking as easy as possible, you can save yourself a lot of moving stress. There are all kinds of things you can do to make moving easier during the packing phase, including:

Put trash bags around your clothes while they’re still hanging in the closet. You can tape the bags to keep things secure (or simply make a small hole in the bottom of the bag, and put the bag over the hangers of several pieces of clothing, so that the bag covers the clothes.)  Then, simply hang the clothes and remove the bags in your new home.

Label boxes clearly, so that you’ll know which boxes need to go in each room.

Use smaller boxes for heavier items (such as books) and larger boxes for lighter things, to make lifting the boxes easier.

Wrap your fragile or special items up carefully in layers of bubble wrap or other cushiony material.

Make your kitchen items easy to unpack and put away immediately, so you can start making food and drink as soon as you are in the new home.

Hire a Moving Company

Hiring a moving company can be one of the easiest ways of making your move stress-free. Moving firms can provide all kinds of services to make your next move a smooth one. From packing up your belongings to loading and unloading the van and putting everything where it needs to be, you can save yourself a lot of time and energy by bringing in the professionals. Keep Your Essentials Within Easy Reach

The days (or weeks!) following your move can be chaos as you try to unpack all of your boxes and start to settle into your new home. It’s helpful to have some essentials on hand that can get you through those first hours and days. A clearly labeled box that contains your toiletries and some clothes and bedding will save you some stress trying to find your essentials on your first night.

A lot of work goes into moving home, but that doesn’t mean it has to be hard. By being prepared and starting as early as possible, you can make moving much less stressful.  When you arrive at your new home, you’ll be calm and collected, ready for a fresh start in your new place.

  1. Oh yes. I haven't moved in awhile and it's ALWAYS somewhat stressful, but doesn't have to be so much. It can be mostly stress-free!
