Create Personalized Ornaments

Let’s start with a classic. Making ornaments is a wonderful way to associate a fun memory of each year on your tree. Or give one as a gift. Grab some clear glass or plastic baubles and go wild. Stuff them with glitter, write names on them with paint pens, or swirl paint inside for a marbled effect. Kids love making those. Or, try a simple vintage style no-sew fabric ornament. Every year when you hang up your ornaments, you’ll remember the fun you had, creating them. And that’s tradition!

Design Your Own Wrapping Paper

Ever ripped open a beautifully wrapped gift and thought, “Man, this paper is too pretty to tear up”? Let’s create wrapping paper with that thought in mind. Plain kraft paper is your blank canvas. Draw on it, stamp it, stencil it. Add some twine, a sprig of something green, and or a candy cane, and suddenly, your gift looks like it belongs in a catalog. Except it’s even better because you made it.

Host A Wreath-Making Workshop

Here’s your chance to gather together for an evening of wreath-making chaos. Lay out all the supplies—greenery, pinecones, berries, ribbon, and let everyone do their thing. Some wreaths will look Pinterest-perfect. Some will look… abstract. Both are amazing. The point isn’t perfection; it’s the laughs, the company, and the inevitable “Why is there glitter in my coffee?” moments.

Gingerbread Houses

Get a kit, or make your own gingerbread from scratch, if you’re feeling ambitious. (Or just make it easy on yourself and use graham crackers.) Make a simple, sturdy icing with powdered sugar and water, with a recipe like this one. Put the icing in a zip-top bag, snip off a corner of the bag, and start building and decorating. Choose some colorful gumdrops, etc, or go with a red and white theme with peppermints and tiny candy canes. Cardboard pieces can be cut into shapes and hot glued together, for a quick non-edible “gingerbread” house. Is your house going to stand straight? Maybe. Maybe not. But honestly, the fun is in the attempt. And if your edible one collapses, you’ve got snacks. That’s a win-win.

DIY Advent Calendars

Counting down to Christmas gets even more exciting when you’ve got an Advent calendar. It’s easy to keep it simple, with little envelopes pinned to a board (kraft colored ones are fun, too and look great with white marker decorations), clipped to a string with mini clothespins, or tucked in a basket. Or, clip tiny drawstring bags to a cord. Fill them with Advent verses, candy, notes, etc. Advent calendars like these aren’t just a countdown; they’re a little daily dose of joy.

Get Creative With Themed Crafts

Ever tried themed crafts? For some festive silliness, download free Grinch SVGs and make some Grinch-inspired stuff – shirts, baby onesies, or even tote bags. It’s a way to sprinkle some humor into the holiday.

  1. So many fun ideas Pam! Since our move to Arizona, I now have a lot of family around. A wreath workshop would be so much fun for my sisters and nieces. Love the advent calendar too! Thanks so much for sharing.
